Dentist fainting: how to report an episode and prepare the visit | Dentistry study Stere

A previous fainting can make it difficult to face a new dental visit. Telling it before the session allows you to organize the appointment with more precise information.

The vasovagal syncope from the dentist is a possible explanation of a transient loss of consciousness, but cannot be recognized with certainty by the patient's only memory.

The starting point is to describe what happened, without automatically labeling the episode as an allergy to anesthesia.

What is meant by syncope

The syncope is a short loss of consciousness linked to a temporary reduction of blood flow to the brain. The vasovagal form may appear in emotional or painful situations; other causes require medical examinations.

Causes and factors to consider

Emotion and expectation

Fear and tension can promote a vasovagal reaction. I'm not a fault and they have to be reported without embarrassment.

Episode circumstances

It is useful to remember if the malaise began before, during or after an injection, and in which position there was.

History of health

Previous episodes, known diseases and therapies help the professional understand which precautions or insights serve.

Incomplete information

The word ‘event’ can describe different sensations: dizziness without loss of consciousness and actual loss are distinct.

What signals to report immediately

Sudden heat, nausea, sweating and pallor may precede a vasovagal episode. Start the team as soon as they appear: do not try to resist in silence or stand alone.

Disappearance, panic and allergy do not coincide

Palpitations and malaise after an injection do not feel an allergy. Also anxiety, effects of adrenaline and other reactions can come into play. Respiratory difficulty or sudden swelling require immediate evaluation.

How to reconstruct an episode

Bring any referees and describe duration, symptoms, recovery and received help. A witness can remember useful details. The dentist decides whether a confrontation with the doctor before proceeding.

Management and possible care

Share the program

Ask what steps are planned and agrees a visible signal to stop the session.

Choose a secure location

The team can adapt the position on the chair and the time of treatment to the clinical situation.

Stop the first malaise

During an episode it is the staff who evaluate consciousness and breath and activate the rescue when necessary.

Recognising urgency

Missed rapid recovery, incomplete recovery, chest pain, difficulty talking or breathing require urgent relief. Outside the studio he calls 112; do not assume it is only fear.

Prepare to visit

Follow the directions. Do not fast for a normal visit on your own initiative: any procedures with sedation may have different instructions. Do not modify drugs or take sedatives independently.
