Endodontic

Canal therapy

What is endodontics?

Endodontics, often called "canal cure", is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies affecting dental pulp, soft tissue inside the tooth.

Why is precise diagnosis important?

The endodontic treatment is essential when caries infect the flesh.

The dental pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, essential for the development and vitality of the tooth. When the flesh is inflamed or infected, due to deep decay, trauma or dental fractures, it is necessary to intervene with endodontic treatment to save the tooth.

Advantages of endodontics:

  • Saving tooth: Endodontics allows the natural tooth to be preserved, avoiding extraction and replacement costs with plants or bridges.
  • Pain relief: Treatment eliminates pain caused by inflammation or infection of the pulp.
  • Restoring chewing function: An endodontically cured tooth can continue to perform its chewing function.
  • Improving aesthetics: The final restoration restores the natural appearance of the tooth.
  • Prevention of complications: Treating an endodontic infection prevents the spread of infection to surrounding tissues and bone.

How does endodontic treatment work?

Endodontic treatment is essential when caries infect the flesh, causing irreversible inflammation (pulpitis) which may evolve into necrosis.

  • Anesthesia: The dentist anesthetizes the area around the tooth to ensure an absolutely painless treatment.
  • Access to the pulp: A small access is created in the tooth crown to reach the infected flesh.
  • Cleaning and shaping: The infected flesh is removed and root canals are cleaned and shaped with special tools.
  • Filling: Radicular channels are filled with biocompatible material to seal them and prevent future infections.
  • Restoration: The tooth is restored with a crown or a filling to restore its function and appearance.
